But Barbarik, along with bravery, was a devotee of the divine powers. For which Barbarik had performed severe penance. Pleased with the penance of Barbarik, Goddess Shakti gave him the boon of becoming a support to the weak.
Along with this, Goddess Shakti gave three arrows to Barbarik, once they came out from the tip of the arrow, they returned after completing their target. But Goddess Shakti had forbidden Barbarik to misuse this divine arrow. With this boon, Barbarik had become more brave than before.
After all these sentences, Barbarik went to his home, and told this entire story to his mother. Now Barbarik was looking for a war, so that he could make good use of his bravery in that war. At that time the war of Mahabharata was going to take place between Kauravas and Pandavas. Barbarik decided to go to that war, and told his mother that he wanted to join this war between the Kauravas and the Pandavas. His mother ordered him to go to war, but asked for a promise from Barbarik.
Barbarik asked his mother what that promise was. Mother said that you will be the “support of the loser” in the war. Barbarik accepted this promise of his mother, and he set out towards war with his three arrows. Shri Krishna ji was watching all these pastimes. Shri Krishna ji was thinking that if he fights on the losing side of the war, then this war will never end. This war will continue like this for many years.
Then Shri Krishna took the form of a sage and met Barbarik in the forest. That sage asked Barbarik to show his art, and said that you will have to pierce all the leaves in this Peepal tree with your arrow. Barbarik accepted this challenge of that sage i.e. Shri Krishna. And by shooting his arrow he pierced all the leaves of the Peepal tree.
Shri Krishna was pleased with Barbarik’s art and started asking for some donation from Barbarik. Barbarik asked what do you want? Then Shri Krishna asked Barbarik to donate his head. Hearing this, Barbarik asked Shri Krishna i.e. that sage to come in his real form, and Shri Krishna gave him his darshan.
Then Barbarik decided to donate his head to Shri Krishna. But before this, Barbarik put a condition, and asked Shri Krishna that after donating his head, only Shri Krishna should give fire to his body, and he could see the war between Kauravas and Pandavas till the end. Barbarik accepted this from Shri Krishna and also gave him a boon. That in Kaliyuga, Barbarik will be known as “Khatu Shyam” in the name of Shri Krishna, and people will worship Khatu Shyam.
